French Open History

The French Open is the second of the four Grand Slams in tennis. Briton H. Briggs captured the first French Open title in 1891 by defeating Frenchman P. Baigneres. The tournament was called the Amateur Championships of France was closed to professionals until 1934.  After 1924, the tournament was open to international players. In 1928 the competition was moved to Roland Garros and the matches were played on clay. From 1934 to 1968, the event was called the Professional International Championships of France. In '68 the name was changed to the French Open. In 2007, Spaniard Rafael Nadal will be seeking his third straight title. Last year, he defeated Swiss Roger Federer in four games and the year before Argentine Mariano Puerta likewise.
The women began play in 1912 and Marguerite Broquedis defeated Mieken Rieck in three sets to claim the first women's championship. This year, Belgian Justine Henin will also be seeking her third straight title. In 2005 Henin defeated Frenchwoman Mary Pierce in two seats and defeated Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova last year.
In March 2007, the French Open announced that it will award an equal amount of prize money for both males and females in every round. The French Open is the final Grand Slam tournament to do this.
