The first Sony Ericsson Open took place on the Island of Key Biscayne in Miami Florida, March 21 April 1, 2007. This tournament attracted more than 270,000 spectators as the leading international professional tennis tournament outside the four Grand Slams. Reigning champions Roger Federer and Svetlana Kuznetsova returned to the tournament as 96 men and 96 women competed for the $6.9 million equal prize fun, however they did not succeed.

In 2007, the 19-year-old Serbian Novak Djokovic became the youngest ATP player in Sony Ericsson Open history to win the mens title as he defeated qualifier Guillermo Canas in three sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in front of 14,593 fans.

On the womens side, Serena Williams rallied against the No. 2 seed Justine Henin and captured her fourth career Sony Ericsson Open womens singles title 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 in front of 13,397 fans.

In the 2006 Nasdaq 100 Open, Federer defeated Ivan Ljubicic in three close sets and joined Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi as the only male back-to-back winners in the tournament's 22-year history. On the womens side, Kuznetsova added the 2006 title to her 2004 Sony Ericsson crown with a straight set victory over Maria Sharapova.
