The Open Golf Championship 2008

The Open Golf Championship 2008

The Open Championship, which is popularly called the British Open by media and other golf associations outside the United Kingdom, is the oldest of the four major championships in men's golf. In 2008 The 137th Open Championship will be held between July 17 to 20 at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in the town of Southport, England.

A total of 156 players will compete at Royal Birkdale with the leading 70, and those tied for 70th place after two rounds, qualifying for the final 36 holes.

The British Open is the only major held outside the USA and is held annualy on one of nine historic links courses in the United Kingdom. The Open is played on the weekend of the third Friday in July, and is the third major to take place each year following The Masters and the U.S. Open and before the PGA Championship.

The British Open, established in 1860, features the peculiarity of a four hole playoff for all golfers tied at the end of regulation, with the playoff continuing into sudden death holes if players remain tied after four holes. The choice of holes for the playoff depends on the course

Originally, the trophy presented to the event's winner was the Champion's Belt, a red leather belt with a silver buckle.

The Champions Belt was retired in 1870, when golfer Young Tom Morris was allowed to keep it for winning the tournament three consecutive times. It was then replaced by the present trophy, The Golf Champion Trophy, better known by its popular name of The Claret Jug.

Today the winner receives not only the prestigious jug, but a hefty cash prize of over £4 million. Historically, The Open's prize money was cthe smallest of the four majors, but since 2002 it has been the biggest.

Held every two years the British Open Golf stages the best European golf players matching up against the best American golfers.

This first official match was held in Massachusetts in 1927 after Englishman Samuel A. Ryder presented the British Open Golf trophy to The Professional Golfers’ Association of Great Britain to place as a prize for an international competition between American and British professional golfers.

Ryder agreed to pay £5 to each member of the winning team and attached his name to the new golf competition.

After the Second World War, the repeated domination of the American team led to a 1973 decision of allowing Irish golfers on the team, and in 1979 the British and Irish team allowed players from all Europe to make the tournament more competitive.

In 2006 the 36th British Open Golf Matches were held between September 22 and September 24, 2006 at The K Club in Ireland. Team Europe won the competition by a score of 18½ to 9½, equaling their record winning margin of 2 years earlier and giving Europe its third British Open Golf victory in a row for the first time ever.
