Washington Redskins history

Originally called the Boston Braves, the club joined the NFL as a 1932 expansion team based in Boston, Massachusetts. One year later, the club changed its name to Boston Redskins to distinguish itself from the baseball team of the same name. The team then moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1937. The Redskins have won three of their five Super Bowl appearances. In the 1981 season, Washington defeated Miami 27-17 in the Super Bowl, led by Riggins’s Super Bowl-record 166 rushing yards. The defense was especially key in the 1987 season, when the Redskins finished the year with an 11-4 win-loss record and defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10 in the Super Bowl. After the 1991 season the Redskins routed the Buffalo Bills 37-24 in the Super Bowl. They are currently members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
