BIG EAST Tournament
The Big East tournament determines the Big East Conference champion and the winner of the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The tournament was first held in 1980 but since 1983 it has been held in Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York.
The tournament is the longest running conference tournament at any one site in all of college basketball.
Since the 2006 tournament, only the top 12 teams in the conference were eligible to compete because of the recent expansion to 16 teams. Starting in 2009, the tournament will expand to include all 16 of the conference's teams.
Georgetown leads the league with seven Big East titles. Connecticut is second with six, while Syracuse ranks third with five and Saint John’s fourth with three championship trophies.
In 2007 the Georgetown Hoyas won the tournament against the Pittsburgh Panthers 65-42. They went on to lose against the Ohio Buckeyes in the Final Four.
